On the 8th of September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II, our longest-reigning and the oldest-serving British monarch in history, sadly passed away aged 96 years old at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The Queen reigned throughout 70 years of extraordinary change, and her steadfast leadership, wisdom and grace were inspiring to us all. Her legacy will always be remembered with great fondness and admiration.

The cover centrepiece features the official United Kingdom 2022 memorial coin, which is no longer available to purchase at the Royal Mint. The £5 coin has been expertly struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish and features on the reverse the late Queen’s official cypher, plus two new portraits representing the breadth of Her Majesty’s reign. One image depicts the young Royal at the start of her reign, which began in 1952, while the second portrays a more recent likeness. 

The obverse features the very first definitive portrait of King Charles III by renowned British sculptor, Martin Jennings. Our longest heir-in-waiting is facing left, the opposite direction to his mother, as is tradition. This is the very first UK commemorative crown coin to feature the official new definitive portrait of the king.

To perfectly complement this truly historic coin, the cover includes four brand-new black and white commemorative stamps issued by the Royal Mail in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. Each stamp features an iconic portrait of the Queen throughout her reign and includes images by famous royal photographers, including Dorothy Wilding and Sir Cecil Beaton. The stamps were cancelled on the very first day of issue – 10th November 2022 – using a specially designed memorial handstamp, which sets in stone the edition limit of only 20,000 covers.
