On the 8th September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II, our longest-reigning and oldest-serving British monarch in history sadly passed away aged 96 years old at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She reigned throughout a 70-year period of extraordinary change and her wisdom, humility and grace was an example to us all. To mark the Queen’s outstanding lifetime of service, the Royal Mail has rightly issued a limited-edition coin cover.

The cover's centrepiece features the official United Kingdom 2022 memorial coin which is no longer available to purchase at the Royal Mint. The 50p coin has been expertly struck in 8-grams of 925/1000 sterling silver to the very highest proof finish. The reverse design has been inspired by the 1953 coronation crown featuring four shields bearing the arms of England, Scotland and Ireland in addition to four floral emblems representing the home countries. Whilst the obverse features the very first definitive portrait of King Charles III by renowned British sculptor, Martin Jennings. Our longest heir-in-waiting is facing left, the opposite direction to his mother, as is tradition. This is the very first UK commemorative 50p coin to feature the official new definitive portrait of the king.

To perfectly complement this truly historic coin, the cover includes four brand-new black and white commemorative stamps issued by the Royal Mail in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. The stamps have been cancelled on the very first day of issue – 10th November 2022 – using a specially designed memorial handstamp, which sets in stone the edition limit of only 1,500 covers.
