The story of Locomotion No. 1 remains one of the great milestones in British engineering. In 1825, this groundbreaking steam engine hauled the world’s first passenger train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway — an achievement that changed transport forever. Designed by legendary engineer George Stephenson, Locomotion No. 1 helped lay the tracks for the modern railway system, transforming not only Britain, but the wider world.

To honour this extraordinary bicentenary, the Royal Mail has issued a strictly limited-edition commemorative coin cover featuring an official UK £2 coin and a brand-new miniature stamp sheet – both released in collaboration with The Royal Mint and Royal Mail to mark this historic occasion.

At the centre of the cover is the official 2025 United Kingdom £2 Brilliant Uncirculated coin, expertly struck by The Royal Mint. The reverse of the coin, designed by Royal Mint engraver William Webb, captures the spirit of Locomotion No. 1’s inaugural journey with the powerful inscription ‘The Journey that Changed the World’. The obverse bears the definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings – making this a significant issue for the modern reign.

Complementing the coin is a beautifully produced Royal Mail miniature sheet featuring four newly issued 1st Class stamps, each depicting a different moment in the historic 1825 journey of Locomotion No. 1. The stamps are officially postmarked with a specially commissioned handstamp making each cover a certified first day of issue.

With a worldwide edition limit of just 10,000 covers, this is a limited global release. Given the dual appeal to both coin and stamp collectors, and the cultural and historic significance of the event, strong demand and a rapid sell-out are anticipated.
