Official Royal Mail First Day of Issue Silver Proof £5 Coin Cover issued to celebrate the 70th Birthday of King Charles III

On Thursday 8th September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away aged 96 years old after reigning for a record-breaking 70 years. This date marked the accession of a new king, Elizabeth’s eldest son – His Majesty King Charles III.

Charles celebrated his 70th birthday in 2018 and to mark this milestone, the Royal Mail released an official, limited-edition coin cover featuring an official UK silver proof £5 coin.

Due to our long-standing relationship with the Royal Mail, we are in the position today to offer this original cover released 5 years ago. However, in light of Charles becoming King, demand for all commemorative pieces relating to our new king are in very high demand, therefore our limited allocation will not last long.

The stunning cover features six official commemorative stamps issued in 2018 by the Royal Mail to mark King Charles’ 70th birthday. The stamps are presented within a miniature sheet and also feature images of the King's Consort, Camilla, plus his two sons, William and Harry.

The stamps are cancelled on the very first day of issue – 14th November 2018 – which coincides with the King’s exact 70th birthday using a specially designed handstamp, which sets in stone the edition limit of just 750 covers.

The centrepiece of the cover is an official UK £5 coin issued by the Royal Mint to celebrate the King’s birthday. The coin has been expertly struck in 925/1000 sterling silver to the very highest proof finish. The reverse design features a portrait of Charles designed by Robert Elderton. Meanwhile, on the obverse is an official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This historic coin uniquely features both the King and Queen.

The significance of our new king's landmark birthday and the difficulty in souring this limited edition cover today are two key reasons why the cover is in such high demand. Harrington & Byrne has managed to secure a very small number of these attractive covers to offer today.
