Attractive collection of distinctive se-tenant stamps released to mark the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation
In 1978 to mark the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, 21 countries released three attractive commemorative stamps organised by the Crown Agents offices in London.
All three stamps from each country are of equal value and are joined together in se-tenant strips of three. The central stamp features an image of the Queen by Peter Grugeon which was the official photograph for Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. This image was later used by cult pop artist Andy Warhol as part of his Reigning Queens series and is an iconic and very popular image of the Queen.
The stamps on the left of the strip of three feature one of the Queen’s beasts, which are based on the famous sculptures by James Woodford which stood at the door of Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Each beast represents the genealogy of the Queen and include the Lion of England, Unicorn of Scotland and Red Dragon of Wales. The stamps on the right depict a natural beast to the territories concerned, for example an elephant is used for Swaziland.
To complete this impressive collection we have included four UK commemorative stamps issued by the Royal Mail and a commemorative sheet issued in 1978 for the 25th coronation anniversary.
This impressive collection of pristine, unused stamps which date back almost forty years is extremely difficult to source, time consuming to put together in this collection and has become highly sought-after by collectors and royal enthusiasts alike. Harrington and Byrne has managed to secure an extremely limited number of these sets to offer today.
