Rare opportunity to own a historic United States postcard featuring two stamps cancelled on Victory over Japan Day - 2nd September 1945

On the 2nd September 1945 Japan officially surrendered which effectively ended World War II. To commemorate this significant historical moment, a unique Victory over Japan (V-J) postcard was issued featuring two US stamps cancelled in Washington DC on V-J date - almost 75 years ago!

The striking postcard cachet features a broken Japanese Flag with military aircraft attacking it. It includes two United States commemorative stamps, the 1944 3c Corregidor stamp and the 1945 3c Iwo Jima stamp. The Corregidor stamp is also known as the ‘Gibraltar of the Pacific’ and was the site of a standoff between US and Japanese and Philippine armies. Today, the entire island is a national shrine to the soldiers who died in its defence. The Iwo Jima stamp was very controversial when first proposed as it featured living people – a violation of US postal regulations. However, once it was issued, it became the most popular US commemorative stamp at the time.

Both stamps are cancelled on 2nd September 1945 in Washington DC and this postcard has since become extremely sought-after by stamp collectors and military enthusiasts alike.

The historical importance and rarity of this postcard are two key reasons why it is in very high demand today. Harrington & Byrne has managed to secure a very small number of 1945 Victory over Japan Postcards to offer today.
